Iron Horse Hotel

The Iron Horse is just five minutes from the park. Harley Davidson fans love this hotel. It's a newer place to stay in Milwaukee, and looks pretty darn cool from the outside. If you bring your Harley to Milwaukee, and stay at the Iron Horse, you will enjoy it even more.

Courtyard by Marriott in Milwaukee

This hotel is situated just west of the Milwaukee River, downtown. Getting to Miller Park from the Marriott is just a ten minute ride west. The hotel is just over ten years old now, but the folks at Marriott know how to treat guests. The Grand Avenue Mall next door is pretty much out of business, but there is plenty of nightlife just up the street on Wisconsin Avenue.

Aloft Hotel is a 15 minute drive from Miller Park. Situated on the northern edge of downtown Milwaukee, all you have to do is head south from their front entrance, and you will find plenty to do. Aloft is hip, and clean. Need a workout before you go to the ballgame? Their facilities are top-notch.

Brewers 2012 Schedule | Miller Park Home Opener

The Brewers 2012 schedule reveals that they will face the St. Louis Cardinals at Miller Park on opening day. Brewers fans will be hungry for a sweep, and the Cardinals will be managed by Mike Matheny. It's looking like a former Brewer looks to be a spoiler on Opening Day. After the three game homestand, Milwaukee will travel to Chicago to take on the Cubs at Wrigley Field. That's a four game series, followed up with a trip to Atlanta for three.

The Brewers come home for nine games after that. They will play the Dodgers, Rockies, and Astros in that order. There are three afternoon games during that homestand, one for each series. To finish the month of April, the Brewers will travel to St. Louis and San Diego. It's on to San Francisco after that. The Brew Crew won't come back until May 7, when they take on the Reds. Should Ryan Braun not win his appeal, we will expect him back around the end of May. The Brewers start a June 1st, home stand, taking on the Pirates and Cubs. They will play the Padres at Miller Park before doing a short Midwest road trip to Kansas City and Minnesota.

Brewers Closer John Axford Wins Award in Canada

The Brewers prized closer, John Axford, has been honored in his home country of Canada by the Canadian Baseball Hall of Fame. Axford, a native of Ontario, joined fellow major leaguer Joey Votto as co-winners the Tip O'Neill Award. The award is given to Canadian players who have displayed great teamwork, outstanding moral standards, and have accomplished many individual successes.
Axford Breaks Record in 2011
Axford was recognized for his record breaking season that included a league high forty-six saves, forty-three of which were consecutive. The closer expressed great appreciation for the award, but still humble. Axford noted that he was most deeply honored for being mentioned in the same category as past winners such as Justin Morneau and Larry Walker.

Axford’s ERA was 1.95 for the year, giving up just four home runs in 74 appearances. His worst outing of the season was opening day in Cincinnati. Some say that the terrible performance of that day was the best “early wake-up call” that a relief pitcher could ask for. He finished ninth in the Cy Young award voting for 2011, and was even considered for the league MVP. The Brewers are happy to have such a solid closer.

I don't normally like to reflect upon bad news when it comes to the Milwaukee Brewers. When a story as big as the Ryan Braun failed test comes around, I feel compelled to speak out. When I heard the news, my first reaction was that the pressure to perform at the pro level must be something that I will never understand. Why would a professional baseball player risk his reputation and his career? What will those very young Milwaukee Brewers fans think? Is this another example of a "you-can't-get-ahead-unless-you-cheat" mentality? Still, we're supposed to wait for the appeal to come through before we hold the National League MVP accountable. This is already a black mark on an amazing season for the Brewers.

No Brewers Batting Power for Fifty Games in 2012

So we might lose Braun for fifty games in 2012. We are sure to lose Fielder for good, so where will the home runs come from? Will any team be threatened by the Brewers batting line up in 2012? At least they won't for the first 50 games of the season, should this suspension hold up. It's back to the dark ages for Brewers fans. I'll be retired before they once again make the playoffs.

Still, we might be able to find a journeyman to fill the vacant Brewers spot that a suspended Braun or long gone Fielder will create. Yes, Zack Greinke is crying for a trade, so there goes an amazing pitcher too. What is happening to our much beloved team? When will I wake up from this baseball nightmare? Is this what the big market teams go through? Spring training is just months away, and we have no idea who will take the field in Maryvale. Hold on tight Brewers fans, it's gonna' be a bumpy ride.

Doug Melvin to be Honored During Winter Meetings

Brewers general manager Doug Melvin won another executive of the year award for the 2011 season. Melvin was initially named a co-executive of the year, along side of Detroit's Dave Dombrowski, by The Sporting News. He was the sole receiver of this latest honor by Baseball America.

Both organizations cited their choice by recognizing that Melvin had turned the Brewers from a mediocre small-market team, into a top contender in 2011. They credited his success to the multiple personnel moves that he made before and during the season.

Melvin Helps to bring Great Pitchers to Milwaukee

Melvin's biggest moves included the acquisition of pitchers Zack Grienke and Shaun Marcum. Grienke and Marcum both became indispensable to the team as they went 29-13, helping the Brewers win their first division title in thirty years. During the season, he brought in reliever Francisco Rodriguez from the Mets and outfielder Jerry Hairston Jr. Hairston quelled fears that an injury to second basemen Rickie Weeks would put the team's dream season in jeopardy. Melvin will receive his award this week at the annual winter meetings in Dallas.

Will Prince Fielder Stay in Milwaukee?

As Milwaukee Brewers general manager Doug Melvin promised, the team is making an attempt to bring back Price Fielder. The Brewers offered Fielder, and reliever Alex Rodriguez, an arbitration deal last week. Fielder would have to accept before December 7, to be placed back on the roster, an unlikely scenario considering his probable asking price, otherwise negotiations will continue and likely fail.

Fans shouldn't fret, however, should Fielder decline the offer. The prized first basemen is a synch to sign with a team that finished in the top fifteen last year. If that turns out to be the case, Milwaukee would, according to draft-pick compensation rules, be entitled to the signing team's first round pick and a supplemental pick after the round ends. The free agent market is teeming with talent this off-season, and two could be better than one.

The Brewers would receive a similar deal if K-Rod rejects the proposal as well. Many cynics are even suggesting that Melvin is fishing for a few extra picks, hoping that the reliever's deal doesn't go through. In addition to the end-of-the-round pick, the team would get a choice immediately before the signing team in the same round.

Though if the scheme doesn't pan out, and K-Rod does accept the deal, he would be entitled to compensation above his last year's deal of $13.5 million. That's a hefty blow to a $80 million budget.

Rule 5 Draft Forces Brewers to Lock In Three Minor League Players

The Brewers padded up their forty-man roster before the Rule 5 Draft this week. Last Friday was the deadline for teams to sign up minor league players, all-but protecting them from being picked-up by other teams during the upcoming November draft. Infielders Brock Kjeldgaard and Zealous Wheeler, outfielder Caleb Gindl, and pitcher Santo Manzanillo are Milwaukee's final recruits, leaving the roster five men short at thirty-five.

 Santo Manzanillo, a “righty” out of Brevard County, threw for over sixty-one innings in 2011. That time in Single-A ball saw him manage sixty-two strike outs and just a 1.75 ERA.

 Gindl did some damage this year with Nashville. He hit fifteen home runs and sixty RBI with a .307 percentage. The Triple-A outfielder was in the Pacific Coast League's top twenty for both hits and walks this season.

 Kjeldgaard and Wheeler each earned promotions during the middle of the season. Kjeldgaard played sixty-five games with Brevard County before moving up to Huntsville to replace Wheeler, who had left for Nashville. Kjeldgaard had a combined twenty-four home-runs during the season, as well as seventy-six RBI. Wheeler, meanwhile, had his 2011 highlights early in the season with Huntsville as he hit twenty doubles and a .272 percentage. His playing time with Nashville was limited, but he did improve his hitting to .275.

Cardinals Tap Matheny for Top Job

A former Brewer has been named the St. Louis Cardinals new manager for the 2012 season. Mike Matheny, who played in Milwaukee from 1994-1998, will replace Tony La Russa as the World Series champs head-man as they attempt to defend their title.

The selection has some skeptics a bit confused, seeing as Matheny has no coaching experience at all in the majors. Others have pointed to the star catcher's stellar thirteen year career in the big leagues in which he became one of only three catchers to play over 100 games without an error.

Matheny also played for St. Louis in the early 2000s. With them he won three golden-gloves before being traded to the Giants.

Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder were honored last week with the Silver Slugger Award. The award goes to the best offensive player in each position in both the national league and American. This is Braun's fourth consecutive Silver Slugger award and Fielder's, second. Prince first won the award in 2007.

This is Milwaukee's second straight year with two Silver Slugger winners. Last year Braun and Yovani Gallardo each received the title. Braun is one of just four outfielders who have won at least four Silver Sluggers in as many years. Sammy Sosa and Dale Murphy accomplished the same feat, and Barry Bonds managed to be honored twice.

Prince Fielder 2011 Stats

Prince Fielder ended his final season with some impressive stats. The Brewers first baseman ranked second in the national league with 38 homer runs, 120 RBI’s, 107 walks and a .415 on-base percentage. He was third in OBP, behind Braun who ranked first with .597. Losing Fielder will certainly change the makeup of the Brewers offense. Braun's other stats also top the league. In fact, the outfielder placed in the top six of eleven hitting categories. Braun’s final numbers for 2011 include a .332 batting average, with 33 home runs and 111 RBI’s.

Brewers GV Patches Honor Former Grounds Crew Director

You may have noticed the Brewers wearing special “GV” patches on their uniforms this postseason. Those letters stood for Gary VandenBerg, the Miller Park grounds crew director who died last week after thirty years on the job.

VandenBerg had been battling cancer following a hip and shoulder replacement in 2010. Brewers owner, Mark Attanasio, released a statement after the death informing fans of the loss. Attanasio offered his thoughts and condolences to the VandenBerg family which includes Gary's wife of thirty-seven years, Lauri.

Although VandenBerg was in too poor of health to do the majority of his usual work this year, the fifty-nine year old could occasionally be spotted watering the mound before the game.

Tony LaRussa and Jerry Hairston Jr.

St. Louis manager Tony La Russa has known Brewers third-basemen Jerry Hairston Jr. for over thirty years. They weren't friends, they weren't business acquaintances, they were closer to family.

La Russa has been at the head of various organizations since the late seventies. His history with the Hairston family began the first day he stepped into his Chicago office in 1979. Hairston Jr.'s grandfather, Sam Hairston, worked side by side with La Russa as coach for the White Sox's affiliate team, the Birmingham Barons. By 1981 La Russa's familiarity with the Hairstons had grown to span over three generations.

Sam Hairstons son, Jerry Hairston Sr., played under the White Sox manager as a left-fielder. His two sons, Jerry Jr. and Scott, would often accompany their father to practice. This was the beginning of a thirty-three year relationship between the young Jerry and the young manager La Russa. Most contact, at least in those early days, revolved around the boy's request that his father get some more recognition. In time however the two bonded over a mutual love for the sport and La Russa's guidance as Hairston Jr. attempted to follow his namesake into the majors.

Sam Hairston passed in 1997, just one year previous to his grandson's debut with the Orioles. Since then, Jr. was a key component of the Brewer's run to the NLCS. Ironically enough, he faces his former friend and mentor as they square off for a spot in the World Series.

Will a Brewers World Series Win Convince Fielder to Stay?

In the midst of this Brewers playoff run, many fans are begging Prince Fielder to stay with the team, no matter the outcome. Price Fielder will enter free agency in 2012. At a current salary of 15 million per year, he gobbles up a huge part of the payroll, and he’s looking for a raise. If the team makes it all the way to the World Series, then wins it all, will he stay in Milwaukee?

This is a matter of logic going up against his heart. Following the postseason, Fielder will be the most sought after free agent in the market. At age twenty-seven, he has put up MVP numbers every year. The big market teams will pay huge money for that young man to join their roster.

Even if Milwaukee wins the World Series, they will remain a small market team. They have the seventeenth highest payroll in the majors, and a player with stats like Fielder would be nearly impossible to keep.

The Brewers are close to $60 million in contractual obligations for 2012, without accounting for off-season pick ups. Keeping Fielder at his current salary would likely put them over the top. From a strictly personal standpoint, I wouldn't want Fielder to stay if the Brewers won. Braun committing his entire career to Milwaukee is one thing. But Fielder staying on as a fair-weather player seems to take some of the joy out of his decision.

The Brewers lead the NLDS by two games for the first time in franchise history. They have a 57-24 home record, including the two victories over Arizona this weekend. This is one of the few trips to the post season for Milwaukee, so let's look at their home record during those contests.

The early eighties saw the team make consecutive trips to the playoffs in 81 and 82. They got all the way to the World Series in 82 but dropped a game seven to the Cardinals in St. Louis. The Yankees took them out early in 1981, losing a pair at County Stadium.

In their first postseason game at Miller Park the Brew Crew won 4-1, but that was only silver lining. The following night the Phillies rolled to a 6-2 victory to take home the division title.

Yovani Gallardo Starts in Game One of the Playoffs

Yovani Gallardo will take the mound for game one, no matter where it will be played. He finished the season with seventeen wins, and an ERA of just over 3.5. Following Gallardo in game two will be Shaun Marcum. Marcum's pitching style works well against eager batters, and a playoff situation will assuredly make the opposing batters try a bit too hard to get on top of things.

K-Rod and Fielder's Comments Come at Worst Time

First Packers receiver James Jones complains about not being involved, now it is Brewers pitcher K-Rod’s turn. The Brewers reliever joined first basemen Prince Fielder this week with some surprising comments. Rodriguez, like Jones, spelled out his problems with the organization as a lack of opportunity. He was picked up from the Mets during the All-Star break, and is distraught that he was promised chances as a reliever but has yet to get into a game. Fielder, meanwhile, elaborated on what he claims has been the case all along; that this will be his final season in Milwaukee. Fans are all but rioting in the street over this last comment.

Everybody, including K-Rod, needs to get their unmentionables out of a bunch. Rodriguez has a multimillion dollar deal to play with the Brewers. When he is needed he will be played. Roenicke and the pitching coaches know what they are doing. Quite clearly, one can see that the decision to play him as set up man has worked so far. If K-Rod’s need to play were given priority over choosing the better reliever, then the team may not be in the position that it is.

As for fans who are concerned over Fielder's comments, get over it. He just stated what we already knew. A small market team such as Milwaukee, already with a 90million dollar payroll, is not going to be the platform or the bank that can contain Fielder. Even if the Brewers win the big one, it is not going to change their payroll problems, nor their place in major league baseball. Fielder will forever credit the team as his jumping-off point, but it was unrealistic to expect him to be a career Brewer.

Nyjer Morgan Gets Emotional During Third Game at St. Louis

Nyjer Morgan came to Milwaukee with a past history of confrontational episodes. In Washington, he went at it with his manager burning some bridges, to be sure. His now famous video where he rushes a Florida pitcher goes on to show that his action started a bench-clearing brawl. On one occasion, he was suspended for eight games following an angry toss of a ball into the stands that hit a fan. “T-Plush” is not afraid to show his true colors when it comes to emotions during the game and the Brewers found that out once again on Wednesday.

The Brewers were down 2-0 to the Cardinals in the final game of a three-game series. A ninth inning showdown between Morgan, opposing pitcher Chris Carpenter, and St. Louis first basemen Albert Pujols ensued, clearing both dugouts. Morgan's little gaffe didn't end with any serious repercussions, but the Brewers management wasn't happy. Manager Ron Roenicke wouldn't comment on the discipline that was handed out, but did say that the proper action had been taken. He went on to say that he understands that emotions run high on the field, and that Morgan can let his emotions get the best of him.

Morgan did not start on Thursday night against the Phillies but did come in during the sixth. He did his best to avoid the questions from the media regarding the incident, but he did say that it was all in fun and players should understand that.

Brewers Prospect Tyler Jungmann Tours Miller Park

Miller Park fans witnessed an enlightening moment this past weekend. On Saturday, the Brewers twelfth overall pick in the first round of this year’s draft donned his uniform for the first time. Right handed pitcher Taylor Jungmann out of the University of Texas commented that he immediately realized that he was out of college and into a real job the moment he put his cap on his head.

Jungmann and amateur scouting director Bruce Seid toured the Park and took time to allow the pitcher to have his own look around the locker and weight rooms. Jungmann probably won't be making his major league debut anytime soon considering he is scheduled to start his journey during the Brewers fall instructional league in Phoenix. Brewers officials have made it clear that they intended to use Jungmann in any way possible over the coming years.

During the past two home stands, the Brewers sponsored charity hosted a seven day event centered around the positive impact that the organization has had on surrounding neighborhoods. In addition to information booths that highlight the importance of community involvement, the entire week was filled with family activities. This included meetings with players and coaches, along with a full tour of Miller Park.

Brewers Foundation and Fox Sports

The foundation partnered with FOX Sports Wisconsin to put on a public auction featuring prizes that would make any die hard Brewers fan drool. You may have missed the chance to boss around Prince Fielder but other great prizes are still waiting to be had. Some of them are valued in the thousands. A trip to the Brewers Fantasy Camp in Phoenix was recently given away; that was a package worth $4000.

The event has already raised $28,000 for the BCF, and that number is expected to rise. That's no surprise, considering that personal pitching and batting lessons, game used memorabilia, and rare autographs are still on the line.

Brewers German Uniforms at Miller Park were Huge Hit

The Brewers honored the large German population of Milwaukee this past Sunday. Their opponents, the Pittsburgh Pirates, also showed their respect for the host city. The Brewers donned uniforms with the German translation of their name, Bierbrauer; and the Pirates wore Piraten.

Brewers Uniforms for 2011

This is the third language that has been seen on jerseys at Miller Park this season. The familiar English, Sunday's German, and the gold Spanish translation “Cerveceros” was on display a while back. Sunday was also the second time that the Pirates have helped the Brewers promote awareness of Milwaukee's cultural heritage. In July 2010, both teams wore the Spanish language jerseys.

Zack Greinke provided the comic relief for the event, a day too early however. During Saturday's game against Pittsburgh, Greinke stepped up to the plate wearing the German jersey. Few people caught the joke. Not even manager Roenicke noticed his star pitcher sporting the next day's attire. A fellow player had to notify Roenicke of the mischief. Greinke entered the dugout to many congratulations from his teammates and then received a reminder from Roenicke that it is against MLB regulations to play in a different uniform than your teammates. The Brewers manager later told reporters that the pitcher would likely only receive a warning this time but a second slip-up could result in a fine.

Many of those who don’t follow Milwaukee Brewers baseball wonder what’s so appealing about the sport. A hot day at the ballpark is heaven to some, hell to others. What I think a lot of strong baseball fans love about the time honored game are the stats. Not just the stats, mind you, but also the inner workings of a team. The epic amount of organization that must go into running a solid baseball team is staggering. Trades, purchases, and sales of players are a constant burden.

Only the avid MLB stat geek delves into the mishmash of new names coming into the club, while keeping track of the players on their way out. Why even be interested? It is a good window into the priorities of the club and a telling sign of the owner’s intentions. Lots of pitchers called up from Nashville? Clearly the coaches are looking to focus on bettering the dugout. When you “bring a player up” from the minors, you never know if one of these no-name batters will become the next Ryan Braun.

Brewers Bring In Closer | Doug Melvin Happy With Trade

A Round of applause for Brewers' General Manager Doug Melvin. For the third time in as many years Melvin has made an expertly crafted deal that will make this small-market team a formidable contender in the second half of the season.

Immediately following Prince Fielder's showing in the All-Star Game, which earned him the MVP award, Melvin announced that a player trade with the Mets had been made. Record setter in single-season saves, Fransico Rodriguez, will be packing his bags and promptly leaving New York for the Midwest. In addition to the closer Milwaukee stands to gain $6 million in the deal, enough to cover the rest of Rodriguez's season salary. Milwaukee will give up two minor-league players who will be named in September.

Melvin hinted that if other opportunities arise to bring in talent then he will take them, but for now it is only K-Rod on his radar. He thinks that the star Mets' player will bring some positive reinforcement into the Brewers relief.

Manager Ron Roenicke has said that he hopes to use Rodriguez in conjunction with Axford to muster some muscle at the end of the day. The bull-pen has been up-and-down this season; it is one of the few things that the team needs to improve if it hopes to make it into the postseason. With the addition of Rodriguez behind the plate their chances have certainly gone up.

K-Rod is a ten year veteran of the majors. He is the all-time single-season saves leader. He as well has performed against almost any batter in the current league, played in the All-Star Game four times, and has considerable postseason experience. He has also worked with Roenicke in Anaheim when the Brewers' Manager was the third-base coach for the Angels.

Melvin and the Brewers' staff were quick to say that the reasoning behind the trade was not for lack of performance by current closer Axford. Axford took over the lead closer spot last May and has been steadily improving since. He is 23-25 in saves and is currently working on a 20-0 streak, the third longest in Brewers history. As the Brewers' head into the second half of the season tied with the Cards for first in the NL central Melvin says that the closing position needs diversity. There will be situations coming down the stretch where having both of these options available will be exceedingly beneficial.

Others have raised doubts about the trade. Skeptics have begun to argue that with Axford performing well and Takashi Saito soon to return from the injured list Melvin is only costing the organization cash that could be spent elsewhere.

Regardless of the opposing views fans and players alike seem to be pleased with the trade. Prince Fielder commented that he is exceptionally happy with the trade because it shows that the administration is doing just as much as the players and coaches to help the Brewers make it into the postseason.

Miller Park Roof Partially Closed for Afternoon Games

Miller Park's famed roof is a luxury for players and fans. There is never a bad weather day at the Milwaukee Brewers home stadium. This weekend though, in the Brewers' sweep of the Minnesota Twins, you may have noticed the monstrous ceiling to be only half closed.

This is a recent decision by Miller Park staff to adhere to a complaint made last year by Ryan Braun and Prince Fielder about poor visibility for the batters. Braun and Fielder pointed out that on sunny days when the roof is open the pitcher is in the sun while the batter is under a shadow. This combination made judging a 90 M.P.H fastball extremely difficult. The multi-ton retractable roof is now positioned over right field during afternoon games to allow both the batter and pitcher to be in the shade.

Miller Park: a venue inspired by beer and its' brewers with a half open roof. Not to mention the home of the Park Parfait, mashed potatoes with BBQ sauce and pork topping. I love Wisconsin.

Brewers Continue Inter-League Play as Twins Arrive

Fans of the Minnesota Twins will be arriving at Miller Park this weekend to watch inter-league play. Are Twins fans as nasty as Cubs fans? Not by a long shot. In fact, I find the Twins fans to be very polite. When I visited the Twins ballpark last spring, I didn't encounter one single heckler.

It's tough to be rude to fans of a team that aren't in your league. Perhaps it would be different if it were during the World Series, but this is just an early summer weekend of baseball. There is no need to bring the brass knuckles.

Prince Fielder Player of the Week

Topping off the Brewers fantastic run to the top of the NL Central on Sunday, was Prince Fielder being named player of the week. It’s the second time this season that Fielder has been chosen for the award.

Last week, Fielder hit six home runs, drove in thirteen, and went 10-20. In the past 10 games played by the Brewers, Fielder has homered eight times. He leads the NL in RBI’s at 58. He second only to Los Angeles' Matt Kemp in home runs.

Fielder is the only Brewer to have won multiple NL-POW awards this season, but others have been recognized for their success. Ryan Braun has won both a player of the week award as well as player of the month in April. Pitcher Shaun Marcum was also named “POW” a few weeks back.

Brewers Wrap Up First Year Player Draft for 2011

The Brewers wrapped up the final day of the MLB First-Year Player Draft on Wednesday . The team made 51 selections during the three day event. Of course you won't see all 51 players at Miller Park in blue uniforms, but the future looks bright for some of these young players. Jed Bradley, and Taylor Jungmann are a couple standout pitchers worth mentioning. The Brew Crew could use a few more solid pitching prospects.

Brewers Class A Timber Rattlers Come to Milwaukee

If you want to catch a glimpse of some future Brewers talent, make sure to check out the “Border Battle” minor league game coming up in late June at Miller Park. Border Battle will feature the Brewers’ Class-A Timber Rattlers and the (Cubs) Peoria Chiefs. The game is scheduled for June 29.

This will mark the fifth time the Rattlers have played a game at Miller Park. It will be their third as an affiliate team with the Brewers. Their first was in 2003 against the then Brewers Class-A Beloit Snappers. That game, won by the Snappers, featured several future Brewers stars including Prince Fielder and Rickie Weeks. In 2009 the Rattlers partnered with the Milwaukee club officially and that same year played their first game in Miller Park. It was also their first win at Miller Park as a team.

Both organizations are very excited about the game this year. Brewers scouts will have a chance to see some showcase talent right at home. These games provide great exposure for not only the Rattlers' players but also for the entire Class-A league which has been trying to boost attendance numbers.

The Milwaukee Brewers “Where’s Bernie” promotion that began yesterday at various parks across the city and state was awash with reports of prize hoarding, stakeouts, internet auctions, and one case of internet boasting. It is rare that a poorly planned publicity stunt brings out the best in people, and yesterday was no different.
The “Where’s Bernie” promotion was hosted by Major League Baseball and the Milwaukee County Parks. The goal was to promote community involvement, and to raise awareness of the park system. The Brewers staff traversed the city, placing 1400 two foot tall lawn gnomes in area parks. Some of the statues contained prizes ranging from box seats at Miller Park to free water park passes, and hotel packages. Another 400 “mini-Bernies” spread around the city were autographed by various Brewer players and staff, including left fielder Ryan Braun and manager Ron Roenicke.
Fans were led to locations in Milwaukee via Twitter, by clues. Things started to go wrong from the start. At five A.M., staffers placing the statues prior to the scheduled start of the event later told reporters that they were followed by early birds. These crazed Bernie fans immediately began to pick them up after the placers were out-of-sight. In another situation, the promotion director stated that people were following the fully loaded carts around the city, waiting for them to stop and would then run up to the cargo area of the cart grabbing as many statues as they could before being seen.
The Brewers organization claimed that they were happy with the outcome of the promotion and said that the vast majority of participants played by the rules which were “eminently clear.” The Bernie hunting started at five A.M. with the bagging limit to be one per-household. The promotion director acknowledged that they were expecting some cheaters but were surprised by the number of people who actually showed up early and took more than one.
Fans who did observe the guidelines of the event correctly were more aggressive in their response to the cheating. Social networking sites lit up with complaints from fans who said they had slept in their cars or had woken up early to get to the event on time. One woman who traveled three hours with her son said that when they arrived at Bradford Beach at five a.m., the beach had already been combed over by earlybirds.
One cheater boasted about her loot on twitter by posting pictures that revealed over three dozen statues in her possession. She was forced to shut down her Twitter account after angry protesters tormented her non-stop. Others began putting the gnomes up for sale on eBay and Craigslist for prices reaching upwards of $300 for autographed ones.

Milt Mason and the Brewers Scoreboard Vigil of 1970

June 12th of this year will mark the 38th anniversary of the death of the original Bernie the Brewer. Milt Mason took it upon himself in the early days of the new Brewers franchise to sit atop the scoreboard at County Stadium until the team attracted a crowd of 40,000 more. Mason's vigil lasted 40 days. His effort seemed more like a non-violent, non-hunger strike, non-protest. On August 14th, 1970 the 69 year old fan was finally able to come down off his perch. The lofty goal had been reached as he welcomed 44,387 fans when the Brewers won 4-3 over the Indians. Sadly, Mason soon became sick. He tried to recover from a long lasting illness, but died three years later on June 12th, 1973.

Bernie Brewer became the teams official mascot in 1973 as a tribute Masons death. A large chalet of barreled beer was built for the mascot to slide into after every Brewers home run; mimicking Mason's famed descent from the scoreboard down a rope on which he burned both hands and feet. In 1984 the Brewers rebuilt their stadium bleachers and put Bernie into retirement. The unemployed Brewer stayed away from games until 1993 when he was demanded back by fans. Currently Bernie has his own dugout at Miller Park and a new bright yellow slide on which to plunge onto what used to be a giant home plate. The rights to the plate have since been bought by Kalahari Resorts which renamed the area 'The Kalahari Splash Zone!'.

As of yet I see nothing officially planned by the Brewers organization to recognize the anniversary of Mason's death. Hopefully there will be a mention of him at the Brewers home game against the Cards on the 12th of the upcoming month. If not, at least a few of us can look back at one man’s dedication to his baseball team, and his city.

Zach Greinke's First Outing Not So Hot

Remember the name Zack Greinke? The 2009 American League Cy Young award winner was all the hype back in the off season when the Brewers picked him up from the Royals in December. Then an unfortunate pick-up basketball game accident ended in a cracked rib for the right handed pitcher. That injury caused Greinke to miss a substantial part of spring training and the first month of the season.

Going into his first start in a Brew Crew uniform on May 4th in Atlanta, Greinke’s performance could have been anybody’s guess. He pitched in three Minor League games to finish off his rehab before his debut at Turner Field on Wednesday night. He had 26 strikeouts in those three games.

"There is definitely a lot of anticipation," Brewers left fielder Ryan Braun said. "We're excited about getting him out there and seeing what he can do.

Sadly, the outcome of his first game as a Brewer was not positive. Zack only made it through four innings with a 9.0 ERA. He walked one and allowed five runs on five hits, one of which was a solo home-run to Nate McClouth. The positives: Greinke pitched a perfect third inning and had six strike-outs against 21 batters.

Brewers Make It Six Losses In A Row

The Brewers fell to the Braves in a shut-out that saw Atlanta sweep the series and raise their win streak to four games. Meanwhile, Milwaukee has now lost six in a row, and have fallen to 13-18. We will have to wait until Monday to see Greinke make his first start at Miller Park against the Padres. Until then the Brewers will have to stop St. Louis over the weekend to avoid falling even farther below .500.

The Milwaukee Brewers are in the midst of slump number two. The first one started with game number one at Cincinnati. The Reds have found a way to pummel the Brewers for quite some time now, and that made the two game sweep a tiny bit easier to take. Their losing the home opener put the team into slump mode, but they snapped out of it after that. We are now looking at that same situation. There are six games remaining on this road trip, and it's time to get back to winning.

The Brewers will put Estrada on the mound tonight. He goes up against Tommy Hanson, currently at 3-3 for the season. Hanson's impressive ERA stands at 2.57, with 34 strikeouts. Marco Estrada is 1-0 right now, and pitched a total of 21 innings so far. He's got 18 strikeouts, and gave up 15 hits. We may see Nyjer Morgan tonight. He's healed up from that nasty thigh bruise, and ready to play. It's time to call this a short, three game slump.

Brewers Closer John Axford Gets Fifth Save

When John Axford took to the mound last night, I was sitting in a traffic jam on I894 in Milwaukee. I thought to myself "If this guy blows the chance for a fifth save, and I'm stuck here, it's not going to be pretty." Instead, Axford struck out the first batter, and got the second and third batters to fly out. It was the Brewers first win over the Reds this season, and gives the team a chance to take the series. If the Brewers get a win today, it will be the first series win against Cincinnati in just under two years.

Winning today would help carry the team while they work through a ten game road trip staring in Houston. Gallardo is set to pitch today. He gave up a few runs in the 14-7 rout of the Astros last time. He can't do that against the Reds, and expect the Brewers bats to make up the difference.

Brewers fans can feel pretty good about the series at Philadelphia. Taking two of three from those guys is special. Now it's time for Brewers Versus Astros at Miller Park. It's hard to be just a few outs from sweeping the Phillies, but the fall back position is still positive. Milwaukee is now in a four way tie for the division lead.

The Brewers will take today off, and face the Houston Astros on Friday night. This three game series will conclude on Easter Sunday, with the first pitch set for 1:10pm. The Crew stays in town for a three game series against the Reds. We hope it's payback time for the Reds. Don't forget, it is Axford bobble head day on Sunday. Prince Fielder RBI Monster | Brewers at Pirates

The first Brewers at Pirates game was rained out. That put the pitching rotation back one day. At least that's what Rick Cranitz told the media. First up on the mound was Shaun Marcum. He shut out the Pirates, and gave up only four hits in the seven innings he worked. The only Pirates threat came in the fifth, which he shut down with a ground ball that led to a double play. His location was fantastic last night.

Prince Fielder continues to pile up the RBI's. His center field homer drove in three last night, and that makes it 14 for the week. He's not pulling the ball. His batting stroke is smooth, and that's a good thing.

Both pitchers had no hitters going through the fourth inning. Milwaukee Struck first, with two outs in the top of inning number six. Marcum had a nice cushion by the time the Pirates broke out the bats and started hitting the ball. The shut out held, as relievers replaced Marcum, and game one goes to Milwaukee

Early season slumps are better than late season slumps. The Milwaukee Brewers broke out of theirs last night. Thanks to Yovanni Gallardo, we won a close one. He pitched a two hitter, and scored the only run of the evening. On top of that Ron Roenicke's decision to take two slumping hitters out of the lineup looks like a genius move. Gomez and Bentancourt needed a mental break. It was one of the first big moves of this new Brewers manager, and his reward was a beer shower after the game.

For the Brewers, those warm days in sunny Arizona are now over. Spring training ended yesterday, and the team heads to Cincinnati in preparation for the the official start of the 2011 season. Opening day at Miller Park is this Monday. Before saying goodbye to the folks at Maryvale, the team defeated the Padres 8-7.

Brewers on Disabled List

Brewers fans hoped to see their disabled list cleared of starters before the season started, but it looks like Corey Hart, Jonathan Lucroy and Zack Greinke will miss the first pitch of the new year. The list has diminished as time marched on, but these three players are pretty important.

Brewers Pitching ERA in 2011 Spring Training

Should we be worried that the ERA for the top seven Brewers pitchers in spring training was 4.15? I'm only picking the seven most active pitchers used for spring training, so my list includes Kintzler, but that's actually a good thing. His ERA was 2.19 over ten games and 12 innings. We can't be too concerned about how the starters pitched during spring training. Unless we actually watched each game, we have no idea how the games were coached, or who was at each position, etc. How a coach prepares for some rookie batter with no batting history to look at, is very different from how they would position the defense when a well known and deeply studied batter takes the plate.

Marco Estrada Has Solid Outing Just Days Before Opening Day

The Padres came up scoreless in Phoenix as Marco Estrada gave up only three hits in just over four innings yesterday. Estrada is just one of many pitchers hoping to nab the final roster spot, and one would guess that he just moved up in the rankings. This fifth spot will only be temporary, but it could give the Brewers staff an idea of whom to keep around, should they need to replace a pitcher during the regular season. It's more than likely that Estrada will have to pitch another game during the last week of spring training.

Who is leading the Milwaukee Brewers in spring training? The stats don't reveal who will be a starter, as this is the time of year where prospects get a chance to work with the best. With that, Erick Almonte is leading the team on offense, if you take his at bats into consideration. Almonte is 32 years old, and bats right handed, and comes out of Santo Domingo.

Luis Cruz is having a solid spring. His 35 trips to the plate have produced 12 hits, and six RBI's. With all the injuries to our Brewers starters, it's worth taking a moment to mention some of the low profile players who are heating up things in Maryvale.

Casey McGehee Was Last to Sign With Brewers and Locks One Year Deal

The Milwaukee Brewers locked in their final unsigned player yesterday, as Casey McGehee agreed to a one year deal. His hopes are that the team can find a way to sign him long-term. A guy that bats .301 and .288 in the past two seasons needs to get paid. He hit 29 homers and had 170 RBI's in those two years.

One would think that a guy who wants to play in Milwaukee, and hits like that will be locked up soon. Does the Prince Fielder situation have anything to do with this one year deal? I wouldn't think so, because all indications are that the Brewers won't be able to afford his prices. McGehee seemed happy to see what comes his way. For now, it's full speed ahead, as the roster is locked in.

It's official, the Milwaukee Brewers opened spring training for 2011. It's just ten short days from the first exhibition game! Things are moving fast, and only one Brewers player stayed home. Shawn Riggans is recovering from an infection, and John Axford is out with a food borne illness.

Brewers Versus Cubs

The first exhibition game will be against the Chicago Cubs, followed up with a meeting with the Giants. This all takes place on the same day, as the team is split in two for these early games.

Ricke Weeks Signs Contract Extension

Some think that signing Rickie Weeks to an extended contract is risky. He has certainly had more than his share of injuries. With just one solid season under his belt, Weeks was offered a four year deal. The contract extension is rumored to be around the 9.5 million dollar mark, annually. Weeks had a great season in 2010, batting .269, with 175 hits. Can Weeks stay healthy? Don't look to the past for that answer. Putting last season aside, he's averaged just 95 games per season in the past five years.

Milwaukee needs their glory now. Yes, we're all Wisconsinites. We were just as happy when the Packers won the Lombardi Trophy last Sunday. Now, it's time for the Brewers to grab some glory and win a World Series. The Brewers players would be wise to keep that image in mind all season. Do this for the fans. Win.

The pitching staff has not looked this good since Rollie Fingers was in a Brewers uniform. The offensive power is there, the defense will certainly be tough enough to keep the Brewers in tight games this year. Barring any meltdowns, we should see Milwaukee in the post season. From there, it's antibody's game.

Mark Kotsay In Melvin's Sights

Mark Kotsay is a man who has played for six different teams over his 14 season career. He's a left handed batter, and could provide support at first base. If needed, Kotsay could move to center field, but that's not likely. It sounds like Doug Melvin has Kotsay in mind for a back up, or clutch hitter.

It's a one year deal. The Milwaukee Brewers and Kameron Loe have found middle ground, as Loe agreed to a one year offer that will pay him just under 1.5 million. With incentives, he should earn over 1.2 million. That leaves only Shaun Marcum and Rickie Weeks with salary issues.

Robin Yount's Stats Still Stand Out

With out a doubt, Robin Yount has amassed some impressive stats as a Milwaukee Brewer. He played more games in a Brewers uniform than any one else in baseball. His 2856 games played beats the next man on the list by exactly 1000. That man is Paul Molitor. In today's free agent market, I would be surprised to see another player as talented as Robin Yount staying so long on any single team.

Bud and Suzanne Selig Donate Big Bucks to Milwaukee Film Festival

Milwaukee’s first family of baseball are apparently into more than just athletics. Announced in a statement today, Bud and Suzanne Selig contributed $100,000 for the past two years to the Milwaukee Film Festival. The festival takes place in September and runs through early October. The Selig’s have been big contributors in the past and in 2011 they will be donating another $100,000 and in 2012 and 2013 they plan on contributing $150,000. I think it’s great to see a local and athletic family donating so much towards the arts.

The Milwaukee Brewers strike again with creative ideas for getting involved in the community. The team is preparing to hold a contest a fan created new concession to be sold at Miller Park in the 2011 season. Now through January 14, fans are welcome to submit recipes via the team’s website for creative items they want to see at the concession stands. Fans must keep in mind tha the items must be able to be prepared and served at the ballpark. After reviewing all recipes, four finalists will be selected to be announced on January 26 and their items will be available to try at the Brewer’s On Deck event at Frontier Airlines Center on January 30. Despite a rocky season this year, it still looks like 2010 will be ending on a good note for the Milwaukee Brewers. In the past few weeks alone, the team has made some great strides in the off season to clean up shop, particularly in their bullpen.

Recently signing Zach Greinke, Shaun Marcum have put the Brew Crew into a sweet spot in the National League, at least on paper. It looks like Takashi Saito will be joining the roster after the holiday break.

Prince Fielder for One More Year

This may be the last season with Prince Fielder in a Brewers uniform. To see the Brewers solidify the pitching rotation may not inspire him to stay beyond 2011, but his bat will certainly help the team in their playoff hopes. It is also important to remember that a handful of the potential starting rotation are all under 30, including the star players we have come to know and love such as Ryan Braun and Corey Hart. 2011 looks like it’s going to be a good year.

The 2011 Milwaukee Brewers season just got a lot more interesting. Over the weekend the story broke that the Milwaukee Brewers traded shortstop Alcides Escobar, center fielder Lorenzo Cain and two pitchers Jeremy Jeffress and Jake Odorizzi. What did they get in return from the Kansas City Royals? The Brew Crew picked up frontline pitcher Zach Greinke and shortstop Yuniesky Betancourt. Greinke looks like he will be a great addition to the team. In 2009, Greinke won the AL Cy Young and went 16-8 with a 2.16 ERA. In 2010, he was 10-14 with a 4.17 ERA. There is no doubt that the talent is there, but did the Brewers give up too much on this trade? Pitching is what the team needs right now so I'm all about this deal. Either way, the Milwaukee Brewers 2011 season is starting to look very interesting!

The Milwaukee Brewers. I’m not quite sure what to say about them right now. Honestly, I’m not really sure if there is much to say about them right now. For many fans, it appeared as though their season was over well before their last game in October and I can’t help but agree. 2010 was a tough year for the team and post season there have already been some changes made in an effort to have a better year in 2011. The hiring of manager Ron Roenicke was a welcome change after Ken Macha was fired earlier this year but it doesn’t look like this will be enough for a 180 from last season. There is much debate on what is going to be happening with Prince Fielder; will he stay or will he go? He is still under contract and it looks like if Fielder isn’t worth his salt in a trade situation, in Milwaukee he will stay. The big thing for Milwaukee in 2011 is trying to get some worthwhile pitching. The Brewers picked up Shaun Marcum, a righty from the Toronto Blue Jays, after giving up Brett Lawrie. Hopefully it was a worthwhile trade to pass on a top prospect. I think the Brewers are headed in the right direction so far in the off season.

With things pretty quiet on the actual sporting front, this piece of Brewers related news is our quick fix for the week. It has been released that earlier this week, Ryan Braun’s Waterfront Grill has been temporarily closed. Along with a sign on the door stating the closing, the restaurant's Web site is no longer available and calls to the restaurant went to voicemail. We understand making some changes while the season is slow but this seems a little fishy to us. In the coming weeks, we’ll see if Ryan Braun’s Waterfront is a sad sinker or a successful swimmer.

Milwaukee Brewers Give Back to Community this Thanksgiving

The Milwaukee Brewers are more than just baseball players – they are a team that consistently gives back to their community. The Brew Crew rang in the holiday season by distributing 500 food baskets to families in need for Thanksgiving earlier this week. The Brewers along with 1290 WMCS, Milwaukee County Sheriff David Clarke and members of the Feeding America and Hunger Task force worked together to make this holiday come together for less fortunate community members. The Brewers Community Foundation also made a $10,000 donation to a local men’s homeless shelter along with the delivery of some baskets. Feeding America contributed with food donations of items such as potatoes, canned vegetables, dressings and cake mixes while the Hunger Task Force donated turkeys and fresh produce. It’s great to see local groups, especially sports teams, giving back to the community and its less fortunate members. Take a cue from the Milwaukee Brewers and give back this holiday season! Local radio station 88.9 have a great initiative right now called “Meet the Need” that features 50 local organizations throughout the holiday season that help community members in need. It’s a great place to start researching Milwaukee charities.

Silver Slugger Awards Announced, Braun and Gallardo Honored

Last week, two Milwaukee Brewers were honored with Silver Slugger Awards for the National League. Left fielder Ryan Braun brought home his third Silver Slugger and starting pitcher Yovani Gallardo received his first. These prestigious awards are given based on the votes of their peers and go to players for every position based on offensive prowess. The Milwaukee Brewers have now had 16 winners for this honor. Braun led the Brewers with a .304 batting average and was ranked second with 103 RBIs. Gallardo led the pitchers of the Brew Crew with four out of the 16 home runs hit in 2010.

Milwaukee Brewers 2011 Spring Training Schedule Released

The spring training exhibition in 2011 will open Monday, February 28 vs. the San Francisco Giants at Maryvale Baseball Park in Phoenix and against the Chicago Cubs in Mesa. 31 games will be played during this exhibition period, 16 of them at the team’s “home” park, Maryvale baseball Park. Some highlight games of the preseason will be the showdown against NL Central Division rivals the Chicago Cubs on March 2 and the St. Patrick’s day game against the White Sox which will feature festive green caps to celebrate the holiday. Every game at Maryvale Baseball Park is scheduled at 1:05 p.m. Pacific time, except for the March 16 game against the Seattle Mariners. New Milwaukee Brewers Manager - Ron Roenicke

Who wants a Valentine when you can have an Angel instead? Looks like the Milwaukee Brewers agree with this logic, as they filled the managing position with Ron Roenicke yesterday. Previously the bench coach for the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim, Roenicke is the 18^th manager in club history for the Brew Crew. The former Angels coach was with the team for 11 seasons and brought home wins each of the seven times he filled in for manager Mike Scioscia.

Other contenders for this position were former Arizona Diamondbacks manager Bob Melvin, Chicago White Sox coach Joey Cora and former manager and current ESPN analyst Bobby Valentine. Will Ron Roenicke bring the team up in the standings and help sell Brewers tickets in the 2011 season?

The Milwaukee Brewers are looking for a new manager and it appears that Bobby Valentine might be the fourth candidate in the running for the spot. The other three possibilities are Bob Melvin, Joey Cora and Ron Roenicke. The Brew Crew has not been the only team to approach Valentine; he has gotten offers from the Baltimore Orioles and the Florida Marlins as well, along with his current position at ESPN. After taking a look at Valentine’s track record, it’s easy to see he would be a great addition to the team. The 60-year old holds an MLB managerial record of 1,117-1,072 with the Texas Rangers and New York Mets, along with winning the NL pennant with the Mets in 200. While nothing has been confirmed yet, isn’t it nice to think the Brew Crew might finally get a respectable manager this season?

Brewers Hall of Famer Bob Uecker Needs Second Heart Operation

Earlier this year, Bob Uecker underwent open heart surgery and it looks like the Hall of Fame broadcaster will be back under the knife soon. There has been a tear at the site of Uecker’s heart valve replacement and he will be undergoing a reparative surgery on October 19. Uecker’s previous surgery caused him to miss 10 weeks of the 2010 season. Recovery for this second surgery will require approximate 8-10 weeks and Uecker expects to be fully healed and ready to rock well before spring training. Good luck with the surgery, Mr. Belvedere!

Don't Hurt Yourself - Milwaukee Brewers Injury List

Now that the season is over, the Brew Crew have spilled the beans on injuries. Some interesting news from the report is a previously unannounced hip issue for pitcher Manny Parra. It appears that Parra has received an MRI on his left hip post season but it is unsure if surgery will be necessary. Apparently, according to assistant manager Gord Ash, this has been an on-and-off issue for a couple seasons now but has never gotten to the point of disabling him. In the coming weeks we’ll see if surgery is the only choice.

Another interesting member on the injured list is Casey McGehee who had a surgery last Monday on his knee. The team physician William Raasch completed the surgery successfully after removing two loose bodies from the area. McGehee had the initial knee surgery in 2009 and this procedure was just a clean up.

It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, and now their time is up – the Milwaukee Brewers 2010 season is officially over. After all is said and done, I can tell you one thing – I’m not too sad to see it end. We saw a season marred with terrible pitching and wasted talent. To really top it off, this week manager Ken Macha was given the sack. After totally blowing two seasons, it’s clear that Macha was not the man for the job. It’s also been made pretty apparent that Prince Fielder will most likely not be coming back to the team. A trade out during the offseason is almost guaranteed.

What lies ahead in 2011 for the Brew Crew? With a bad managerial track record (9 managers in the past 25 years), the management the team needs might not want to deal with the team. We’re still without any valuable pitching and hopefully this offseason will bode better than the last one. The team will also be losing a big player. Only time will tell what the fate of the Milwaukee Brewers will be next year and for the love of all that is holy, I’m hoping it’s better than this past season.

High Attendance Numbers for Milwaukee Brewers This Season

Last night marked the final home game of the season for the Milwaukee Brewers and despite their less-than-stellar playing this year, Brewers fans were still very present. Though of course fans were disappointed in the season, the Brew Crew are lucky to have their fans stand by their side through thick and thin. This year, there was an average of 34,000 fans at each home game, a great turn out all things considered. After looking at reports, attendance is down approximately 9% from last season, but the fact that a city of this size is still getting these numbers is great. The Milwaukee Brewers placed 11^th in attendance this season in the MLB despite the fact that we are in the smallest baseball media market. Over 2.7 million fans visited Miller Park this year, which beat out bigger teams such as the New York Mets and the Chicago White Sox. I can’t wait for next season, hopefully we’ll get a chance to trade out Prince Fielder and pick up some good pitching. Great fans + better pitching = Brew Crew win!

This is it, the last three home games at Miller Park for our Milwaukee Brewers. I went to the game last night, and I must admit that it had a certain "it's over" feel to it. It might all be in my head, but the Brewers looked loose. They were smiling, and laughing, perhaps not taking the season very seriously anymore. Who can blame them?

With that being said (or imagined), there is still time to get out to Miller Park for a fun evening of Brewers baseball. The Brew Crew will finish their home games against the Florida Marlins. If we only had some solid pitching, I would most likely be blogging about the post season in Milwaukee. Instead, I'm imagining things about our Brewers. Get on out to Miller Park. It will be a long, cold winter.

Getting Ready for Farm Aid at Miller Park October 2

Coming up on October 2, the musical event of the season – Farm Aid – will be taking place at our very own Miller Park. This year marks the 25^th anniversary of the daylong event that has taken place in various cities across the US. The board of directors includes Willie Nelson, Neil Young, John Mellencamp and Dave Matthews who all perform annually alongside a changing set list. I’m really excited because this year Jeff Tweedy from Wilco, Jason Mraz and Band of Horses are also going to be playing. Hopefully we will get some great fall weather for this Saturday show, with hopefully a crisp but dry forecast. I’m excited that such a cool event is coming to Milwaukee that pairs both great artists working towards a great cause; helping the raise awareness and funding regarding family farms. I think Wisconsin is a great place to hold this event because we are, after all, the dairy state! Can’t have dairy without those farms!

Though the season is now winding down, there is still much fun to be had. Here I will explain to you some critical points of the Miller Park experience including :

As with most sports teams, it is important to come appropriately dressed to the ballgame. If you're going on a nice day when the roof is going to be open, I would recommend bringing a baseball cap (of course with a Brewers logo on it!) to shield your face from the sun. Also, don't forget about repping your favorite Brewer and wearing a t-shirt or jersey with their name on the back. If you bring babies, make sure to dress them up to in some sweet Brewers onesies or rompers!

Once you're all geared up, how are you going to get there? Depending upon how much team spirit you want to show (aka how many alcoholic beverages you intend on consuming), it comes down to either driving yourself or taking a shuttle from one of the various local bars. I usually go the shuttle route because it's fun to hit up the bars downtown, have a few drinks, take the bus with friends and not worry about parking/operating a motor vehicle. On the other hand, bringing your own whip has its benefits - you get to bring all your tailgating gear, whine obligatorily about the traffic, and you get to blare Dave Matthews Band the whole way there.

Now the last yet one of the most important facets of hitting a Brewer game at Miller Park - TAILGATING! If you get a chance, please please please take full advantage of the glory that is tailgating at Miller Park. Brats and beer on hot asphalt while playing bags with your friends and family? Perfection. Make sure you bring extra propane or charcoal with your grill, plenty of buns, condiments and meat along with other snacks and as much beer as possible. Better to do your eating and drinking out in the lot than pay an arm and a leg for a plastic bottle of warm Miller Lite inside. Bring plenty of chairs for the friends you're bringing and even some for the friends you'll probably make. Hopefully this guide will help make your next trip at Miller Park be everything you dreamed of and more!

Busy Week For the Milwaukee Brewers

A robbery, a milestone and a sweep? All in one week? You've heard me right, the Milwaukee Brewers have been a very busy bunch this week, both on and off the field.

On the field, the Milwaukee Brewers swept the Pittsburgh Pirates when they played the team at Miller Park last weekend, the 27th-29th. The weekend featured great plays including a great run-scoring hit from newbie Chris Dickerson, RBI singles by Alcides Escobar and George Kottaras and a great home run from Ryan Braun to wrap up Sunday nights game. Sunday night also marked the 599th career save from veteran pitcher Trevor Hoffman.

Off the field, a less cheerful but still interesting news, pitcher Yovanni Gallardo was robbed at gunpoint on Friday while out with a team clubhouse attendant. The two were going to grab a bite to eat on Milwaukee's south side and were held up by an unidentified assailant on South Caesar Chavez Drive near Mineral Street. Fortunately, both were unharmed and the police are continuing to do further investigation.

Commemorative Statue for Bud Selig Unveiled at Miller Park

For every Milwaukee Brewers ticket you've bought to a game in the past 40 years, you can thank Mr. Bud Selig. This week a statue to commemorate Selig was unveiled in the plaza outside of Miller Park. After his contributions not only to baseball but the Brewers, it is definitely a well deserved honor, as Selig brought major league baseball back to Milwaukee nearly 40 years ago. The unveiling ceremony was full of familiar faces, including team owner Mark Attanasio and Brewers’ Hall of Fame broadcaster Bob Uecker, all of which only had great things to say about Selig. Before he was Commissioner of Baseball, Selig owned the Milwaukee Brewers from 1970 through the late 1990s before turning the team over to his daughter Wendy Selig-Prieb.

As a native of Milwaukee, Selig accepted this great honor with sincere emotions but still maintained modest about his victories and included that they were also achieved for the greater good of the community. Selig’s commemorative statue is in good company with other franchise heroes, Hall of Famers Robin Yount and Hank Aaron. Despite the hot and cold season the Milwaukee Brewers have had this year, the legacy of MLB in Milwaukee would not have had a chance of survival without the helping hand of Bug Selig.

Randy Wolf was pitching a great game. It was the top of the ninth when Macha decided to pull him, and bring in the somewhat overworked John Axford. Was that a wise decision? Axford was out of gas pretty much from the start, the Cardinals scored two runs, and the bases were loaded when the call went out to Trevor Hoffman. Would Hoffman come through, or melt down? At the very least, we know that Hoffman has been in that situation perhaps 200 times before. He struck out the last batter, and our Milwaukee Brewers enjoy this day off after sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals. This game had that stressful nature from the start.

It's going to be tough to get hits off of Adam Wainwright. With an ERA of 1.99, every batter that faces him has the same problem. Wainwright is working on a 20 win season, as he tries his best to notch win #18 later today. He hasn't lost a game at Busch Stadium this season. It must be the crowd firing him up. Game time is 1:15pm, and I will be in my cubicle, checking the score from time to time.

Randy Wolf is 8-8, and working on a 4.86 ERA. If he pulls of a win, it will be three in a row for our streaky pitcher. The weather at game time should be perfect.

Edmonds Started his career playing for the California Angels. He spent the bulk of his long career with the Angels and Cardinals. Edmonds has had a history of injuries throughout his 16 years in the professional baseball circuit but has remained a strong player with a great interest in the game. Cincinnati is the eighth team for Edmonds, and possibly his last.

Chris Dickerson Backs up the Brewers Outfield Staff

Chris Dickerson has only been playing in the major league since 2008, debuting with the Reds on August 12. The current stats for the new lefty outfielder tally in at a .274 batting average with eight home runs and 30 RBIs in 148 games, 94 of which were starts. Dickerson has spent some time in a Minor League rehabilitation assignment after a hand/wrist surgery but is expected to be suited up and ready to rock the field for the Arizona Diamondbacks series. Miller Park fans want to see what Chris Dickerson can do to improve the Milwaukee Brewer's roster for the rest of the current season and beyond.

With the return of Bob Uecker last Friday, the Milwaukee Brewers saw some luck with a 6 game winning streak and they swept the Washington Nationals and won games against the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Cincinnati Reds. The team will be traveling to Houston this weekend to take a shot at the Astros and will be out of town until the weekend of August 6 to play the Houston Astros at home. Hopefully the team will keep up the good work and do us proud both at home and away!

75 year old Uecker just spent the past three months recovering from a heart surgery in which his aortic valve, aortic root and a piece of his ascending aorta were replaced. The original Mr. Belvedere has been not only influential in Milwaukee Brewers baseball but has also impacted Major League Baseball, as he played for the Milwaukee Braves, Philadelphia Phillies and the St. Louis Cardinals back in his hey-day. MLB All Star Week Activities

Despite the less than stellar results the Milwaukee Brewers have seen so far this season, there is definitely one thing worth celebrating and that is the Brew Crew’s presence in the All Star game and Home Run Derby. With our very own Prince Fielder taking home the victory on the derby last year, at the beginning of the season, most fans would not have believed that Corey Hart would be the one making it to the 2010 Home Run Derby. Advancing to the second round with 13 runs, Hart gave both Hanley Ramirez and David Ortiz “runs” for their money and came in third place.

At the All-Star Game tonight, you’ll see three Brewers; Yovani Gallardo, Corey Hart and Ryan Braun. The latter two will be starters in the outfield while pitcher Gallardo will be limited to sitting and looking pretty throughout the game as he is on the disabled list for a strained oblique. This is a great step forward for the Brewers as this is the fifth consecutive year in which the team has had at least three men on deck for the All-Star Game. This has also been a big step for Ryan Braun as this is his third year in a row to be a starter for the game and has been very popular with the fans. Corey Hart will be making his second appearance as an All-Star and actually gained his position due to an injury of another player. I’m willing to look past the hang-ups the Milwaukee Brewers have had thus far this season to catch what looks to be a great ballgame tonight!

Yovani Gallardo Hits Third Home Run This Season

He may have given up four runs, but Yovani Gallardo got one back with the swing of his bat. He hit his third home run for the season last night, as Milwaukee defeated the Houston Astros. Axford made us all a bit nervous, when there were two men on in the top of the ninth. His 97 MPH pitches were looking a bit wild, but he got his control back after walking one man and forcing another to ground out to end the game.

Tonight is game three at Miller Park. After that, it's the road for our Milwaukee Brewers. They take on the St. Louis Cardinals in a four game series down south. July 5th will be the first Brewers VS Giants game of the season. That 3pm start is the first afternoon game that we have seen in a while I'm heading to Miller Park for that one. See you there?

What Can Stephen Strasburg Do For the Milwaukee Brewers?

No matter who you root for, a name that has been everywhere in baseball the past few weeks is Stephen Strasburg. The 21 year old righty from San Diego, CA is the one of the newest additions to the Washington Nationals and he is making a huge splash for himself and his team. He is currently 2-0 with a 1.86 ERA with five walks and 32 strikeouts in only his first three starts with the Nationals. He has been pumping up sales for the Nationals both at home and away. It is projected that this young star will be seeing seven starts by the July 13 game against the Los Angeles Angels. So what does this mean for the Milwaukee Brewers? I am hoping that Strasburg stays hot on the pitch to bring some interest to Miller Park when the Washington Nationals come to play a three game series starting Friday, July 23 through Sunday, July 25. Though we have been seeing more success recently, anything to increase the win loss record will be helpful. Not to mention it would probably be a great game to see!When are the Milwaukee Brewers going to pick up a great pitcher like Strasburg?

I don’t want to get too ahead of myself here, but as a Brewers fan, I am starting to feel a feeling that I haven’t had very often this season – hope. The Milwaukee Brewers certainly delivered last week during their series at Miller Park versus the Chicago Cubs, winning two of the three games and winning the series. Despite those wins under their belt, the team went on to win only one of the three games they played against the Texas Rangers last weekend. The team is currently in California playing the Angels and they brought home a huge victory last night, winning 12 to two. After absolutely crushing the Angels, can our boys keep it up? There are two more games in California and then a weekend series against the Rockies in Colorado. Hopefully these new successes can continue and the Brewers would have playoff chances once again. Corey Hart and Casey McGehee have really been heating up at bat and I cannot wait until the at home series starting June 22 against the Minnesota Twins. I can’t think of a more perfect way to spend a summer day than at Miller Park!

This week we will be seeing the second at home series between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs. The three day series with the Cubs starts on Tuesday, June 8 with a 7:10 game and another game at the same time on Wednesday, June 9. On Thursday, the Brew Crew will be playing an afternoon game at 1:10 PM for the final game of the series. With the spotty at best season that the team has been having so far, I am not going to lie, I’m getting a little worried about this season. I do bleed Brewers though so I will not give up hope yet! Total Eclipse of the (Corey) Hart

Corey Hart is heating up this season and boy, do we need it. The Milwaukee Brewers have not had the choicest season so far but during the games so far we have seen some glimpses of star players, including Casey McGehee and of course, Corey Hart. So far this season, Hart has hit 14 homeruns in 53 games, compared with 12 in 115 last year. Though his current stats so far are not expressing a huge change in his playing, something is definitely working to Hart and essentially the Brewers advantage right now. A popular theory in Hart’s improved playing is the presence of Jim Edmonds. Hart is being forced to “earn his keep”, if you will, with the addition of another outfielder. After being one of the fundamental players of the team and seeing little rest since 2008 when he could and should have seen some time on the bench, Hart might be getting a little push that he has needed to keep his feet on the field. Will you be wearing your sunglasses at night while picking up some Miller Park tickets to see Corey Hart heat up the field?

The Brew Crew will start by playing three games against the Houston Astros and then for the weekend they will play the New York Mets. With the team’s less than desirable standing in the NL right now (17-27) and the weather really starting to get nice (highs in the 70s and sunny the rest of the week!) now is the time that the Brewers need to win. A few victories at home will really help in bringing out the casual fans this summer to enjoy the weather and the ball park but a few more loses and Brewers tickets could be off the radar for most folks. Ken Macha, I'm peeved with you. With the Milwaukee Brewers losing their ninth consecutive game last night in Pittsburgh, fans are starting to get feisty. And by feisty, I mean blood-thirsty. There must be someone here to blame for the blasphemous beginning of this Brewers season. Most fans have started to point fingers at manager Ken Macha. The criticism being fired at him is mostly about his less than enthusiatic manner in his post game comments, and his analytical approach to leading our beloved Brew Crew. Though he may not be the most fun guy, is it fair for us to place the blame on Macha for our early season struggles?

It was a main priority during the off-season to upgrade our seriously lacking bullpen. Step one which wasthe hiring of new pitching coach Rick Peterson was followed with Brewers, leftys Randy Wolf and Doug Davis and righty setup man LaTroy Hawkins coming to town. In further attempts to solidify our pitching, Trevor Hoffman, Claudio Vargas and Carlos Villanueva were re-signed. So far, we haven't seen the results we were hoping for. In fact, all-star closer Trevor Hoffman has been one of the largest disappointments of this first leg of the season with a 13.15 ERA.

Our offense has been slightly better than the bullpen, at least putting some runs on the board and the team currently sits third in home runs and sixth in RBI and runs scored. Despite solid numbers, big players like Prince Fielder have been lacking in their usually stellar performances. After coming in at 15-24 in the first 39 games, whose head is going to be on the chopping block for this one? Do we blame Macha? We probably shouldn't, but until things start looking up, it looks like he just might be the unlucky one.

A Closer Look At Second Season Brewer Casey McGehee

Though we’re still in the beginning of the baseball season, a name that keeps popping up for the Brewers is Casey McGehee, second season starting third baseman. After building up his resume by moving through the Cubs’ minor league circuit, McGehee was waived after the 2008 season before being swooped up by the Milwaukee Brewers for the 2009 season. Throughout his first season with the team, McGehee managed to carve out a regular role for himself because of the injuries and lackluster playing that plagued the team, pushing him to the top of the starting list.

Now in his second season, McGehee’s is becoming a hot topic with his consistent on field efforts and the visibility of his family to fellow players and fans. So far he has started off this season on the right foot, hitting 7 homers placing him 6^th in the NL and he also ranking in at 2^nd in the NL for RBIs (30). McGehee and his wife Sarah have two children, a newborn daughter named Cooper Reese and a 3-year-old son Mackail. The family have gained attention because Mackail, who has cerebral palsy, threw out the ceremonial first pitch at a game last July and then McGehee hit a game-winning homerun. The family are very open with their son’s disability and hope to be able to help others understand cerebral palsy. In an interview McGehee did recently with OnMilwaukee.com, he stated that “If there is any chance that I could help one person understand what people with those types of disabilities are going through and maybe help someone else in this situation, that's worth it.” The fast growing fan-fave has a great attitude on and off the field which adds a lot to the team that has been struggling in this first part of the season. I’m looking forward to getting some Milwaukee Brewer tickets once the weather warms up to see my new favorite player Casey McGehee at Miller Park!

Milwaukee Brewers Beloved Radio Announcer Bob Uecker has Successful Surgery

The Milwaukee Brewers revered radio announcer Bob Uecker underwent heart surgery this past Friday and the procedure was a success. Uecker’s surgeon was Alfred C. Nicolosi who is a cardiothoracic surgeon at Froedtert Hospital and the Medical College of Wisconsin made a statement on Friday that they were pleased to see Mr. Uecker’s surgery go so smoothly. The 75-year old Hall of Fame radio broadcaster had his aortic valve, aortic root and part of his ascending aorta replaced along with a coronary bypass. It is expected that Uecker will stay in the hospital for a little less than week post surgery but his full recovery is approximated at 10-12 weeks. 2010 marks Uecker’s 40^th season broadcasting Brewers games and the team and fans alike will be wishing him the quickest of recoveries to see him back in the press box as soon as possible! I have a feeling that the value of Miller Park tickets will be increasing once we see Uecker back in the box.

Despite the inconsistent playing we have been seeing from our Milwaukee Brewers, the team realizes that at the end of the day, it’s just a game and what happens off the field is what’s important. This can be seen with their sponsorship with a Fathership initiative program. Along with several other community businesses, the Milwaukee Brewers announced they would be helping fun a road trip for fathers and sons up to Minneapolis on May 22 for the Brewer’s series with the Minnesota Twins. Along with the Brewers, Mayor Tom Barrett, M&I Bank and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee are just a few of the other sponsors of this trip. The purpose of this trip is to help mitigate some of the various issues faced by the nearly 24 million children in the United States that do not live with their biological fathers. This trip is aimed at helping fathers understand how truly important it is to be active in their children’s lives.

For the trip, 50 fathers and their children along with business people from the sponsoring companies will be flown to Minneapolis via Frontier Airlines to visit the new Target Field and watch a game. A special breakfast and presentation with Milwaukee Brewers LaTroy Hawkins and Rickie Weeks will take place at a hotel in downtown Minneapolis before the game. M&I Bank will also be giving a $500 savings bond to each child and this will be matched by the Brewers Community Foundation. The fathers chosen were members of Barrett’s Fatherhood Initiative that have shown great commitment to spending time with their children since joining the appeal. This is a great cause and community members are proud to see their own Milwaukee Brewers supporting it!

This weekend kicks off the first showdown between the Milwaukee Brewers and the Chicago Cubs. The turnout for these games is almost always exciting as many Chicago fans travel up to the Brew City to show some love for their Cubbies. Though tailgaiting is usually somewhat of a spectacle at Miller Park, this weekend will be an interesting one to see the back and forth banter and heckling between the fans. It has been known to get a little rowdy and more often than not, some drunken fans will attempt to start fights. The games will be taking place with evening games Friday and Saturday and an afternoon game on Sunday. Sunday night was the first of hopefully many Brewers games I get to go to this season. The Brew Crew played their third and final game in the St. Louis Cardinals series at home and finally took home a win in the last inning with a homer from Casey McGehee. Not only was this special because it was my first time at the ballpark since last year but I also got the opportunity to sit in one of the founders suites. I think I’ve been spoiled now with all of the catered food and wine, a private bathroom and comfy couches instead of bleachers! The view from the suite was great, about 20 rows from the field behind home plate on third base side. I had a chance to see my favorite players Ryan Braun and Corey Hart up close and personal. The only pitfall was that I didn’t get to tailgate before the game. I can’t wait to get my hands on more Milwaukee Brewers tickets this summer!

Milwaukee Brewers home series vs Colorado Rockies | First Series at Miller Park

So far, so good – the Milwaukee Brewers did well with their first home series vs the Colorado Rockies, winning two of the three games. Despite losing on opening day, the weather was perfect with sunny skies warm weather and of course many fans dressed festively in the parking lot, tailgating before the game. After seeing seven straight losses to the Rockies, the Brewers entered Tuesdays match ready to fight. Third baseman Casey McGehee hit a homer in the first inning, allowing Randy Wolf to debut his arm and strike out to eight, brining the Brew Crew a victory at their second home game. On Wednesday night, the Brewers couldn’t forget the taste of victory and went back in for another well-fought win. The Brewers overcame the challenge of an early three-run deficit and brought home the bacon on this game and ultimately the series.

This weekend it's Milwaukee Brewers vs St. Louis Cardinals, with the series kicking off on Friday night at 7. Though the last two days have been less than desirable baseball weather, this weekend should be clearing up and hopefully we can have an open roof for this exciting series!

Milwaukee Brewers fan favorite, Ryan Braun will be a hot topic in Milwaukee in April, not only for his skills on the field but also about the opening of his new restaurant. Located in the Third Ward neighborhood of Milwaukee, the hometown of the Brewers, the new restaurant will be called Ryan Braun's Waterfront Restaurant. The restaurant will be located at 102 N. Water, right along the Milwaukee River. The previous occupant of this location was Fratellos Waterfront Restaurant. The space offers great outdoor patio seating right along the river, or for those who opt to dine indoors, a 275 person dining room. If the great location wasn't enough, they have a great menu to boot with options for all from chicken, pizza, burgers, pasta and more.

This restaurant will be Braun's second venture into the "restauranting" world with his first eatery located in Lake Geneva, and called Ryan Braun's Grill and Tavern. The opening date of the Lake Geneva location has yet to be announced, but Milwaukee restaurateur will be pleased to hear Braun hopes to open on the same date as the Milwaukee Brewers home opener, April 5. The Milwaukee Brewers are getting a break from the still-chilly temperatures in the Midwest with spring training in Phoenix, AZ at Maryvale Stadium. The intimate venue seats just 10,000 fans and is a perfect opportunity for a true-blue Brew Crew fan to get a taste of what the upcoming season will bring. After witnessing the overall 2009 performance, expectations have changed. I was not happy with the team’s 80-82 finish last season. The Brewers are looking to dominate the NL this season. With the new additions to the bullpen made over the off season and high expectations for returning All-Stars Prince Fielder, Ryan Braun and blooming Yovani Gallardo, there are some questions that remain unanswered with the season starting soon. Milwaukee Brewers tickets are selling as if this will be another playoff year. I'm holding off on that exuberance.

Are the veteran lefty pitchers our best option for upgrading the Brewers pitching? When the team adamantly scouted Randy Wolf and did sign him to a three year deal with Milwaukee but while he was a solid player for the Dodgers last year, is this enough to bring the Brewers out of this rut in pitchers? Another question is whether or not our disappointing offense will shape up this season. Key players like Corey Hart, Carlos Gomez and Rickie Weeks all dissatisfied their responsibilities last season for several reasons but the team still earned 80 wins sans their poor offensive rotation. If these players can step it up when they get back on the field, we may have a chance at being on the upswing this season.

It was not the highest number of Brewers single game tickets sold in one day, but third best is quite good. The Brewers certainly sold out their opening day game, along with two other April contests. Another sold out Brewers game is May 15, when the Phillies come to town.

I love the fact that the Brewers fans come out to support the team. They didn't make the playoffs in 2009, and we're still seeing huge numbers of tickets sold. Die hard fans are what they are.

Corey Hart Tops Milwaukee With Arbitration

Outfielder Corey Hart was the first Milwaukee Brewer in nearly a decade to fight his salary arbitration and it is official: Hart will be taking home the bacon this season. At his hearing last week, a three-member panel of judges allocated Hart the $4.8 million salary he was petitioning for the 2010 season. The Brewers had filed for the $4.15 million but when negotiations at the last minute didn’t offer a concession, the sides had a meeting in St. Petersburg, FL. According to Hart, there was no bad blood surrounding the hearing. Gord Ash, Milwaukee’s assistant GM spoke with Hart prior to the meeting and expressed that regardless of the outcome of the hearing, Hart is still the right fielder and they hope he has a good season. Now that business is settled, it’s time for some baseball. Fans can’t wait to see Hart and the rest of the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park on opening day, April 5th.

Scott Schoeneweis Signs To Milwaukee Brewers Minor League

Just this week lefty Scott Schoeneweis agreed to a minor league contract with the Milwaukee Brewers, which includes an invite to Milwaukee’s big league camp where he has the chance to become a second left hander out of the Brewer’s bullpen. Schoenweis has the opportunity to get an $800,000 one-year contract if he joined the 40-man Brew Crew roster and the possibility to acquire $700,000 in performance bonuses. The 36 year old veteran has 11-years in the major leagues under his belt and is 46-57 with a 4.97 ERA. He has also made 93 starts in his 562 appearances. After the tragic loss of his wife last spring, we hope Shoeneweis gets this great fresh start with the Milwaukee Brewers. As long as Brewers tickets keep selling, the management can pay for better players.

Though we’re only two weeks out from spring training, the Milwaukee Brewers will not rest until our 2010 pitching is perfect. The Brewers made a claim for right-handed Marco Estrada of the Washington Nationals and then designated fellow righty Tim Dillard for assignment. Estrada had 15 appearances with the Nationals over two seasons and went 0-1 and earned a 7.20 run average. Estrada throws his fastballs in the low 90s (mph) and is able to incorporate a sharp curveball in the 78-81 mph range. Fans are getting pumped for opening day at Miller Park will be Monday, April 5 against the Colorado Rockies. Hopefully we will see some of the great new pitchers we’ve signed in this offseason really show us what they’ve got.

Few Milwaukee Brewers fans felt that Ben Sheets would be offered such a huge one-year deal. Sheets was offered 10 million dollars for one year of work in Oakland. Sports reporters mention the risk that the A's are taking, and the Brewers know that risk all too well.
Ben Sheets has forced the Miller Park faithful to endure his injuries, and mental issues. We wish the Oakland A's the best. They saw a healed up pitcher who has been tossing the ball at 90+ MPH, and felt it was time to pay the man.
The ten million is just the first step to what could be a huge payout if Sheets can keep his limbs and fingers intact. Milwaukee didn't think he was worth that kind of money, but more power to Oakland for taking the shot on Ben.

Miller Park Milwaukee Brewers Salutes Robin Yount

Born September 16, 1955 in Danville, IL, Robin Yount has been a baseball star since a young age. The former MLB player spent the duration of his professional career with the Milwaukee Brewers baseball club, being chosen third overall in the 1973 MLB Draft at the ripe age of 18. Throughout his 21-year stint with the team, he accomplished great things personally and for the Brewers and in 1999 he was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
Throughout the 1980s, this shortstop had more hits than any other player in the game, leading the American League with 210 hits in 1982. He was a pioneer of weight training early into his career which resulted in his great power hitting skills. Yount was voted All-Star in 1980, 1982 and 1983, a team record for consecutive starter which was only broken in 2008 by Ryan Braun.
1982 was a great year for Robin and was statistically his strongest throughout his career. He earned his first MVP award and the Golden Glove Award. In the 1982 season, Yount boasted some career highs with 29 homers, 114 RBI, a .331 batting average. Yount also was first in the AL with 200 hits, a .957 OPS and a .578 SLG that season. This was his only 200+ hitting season of his career. He ended his great season by helping take the team to their only World Series display. Yount was actually the only player to gather four hits in two World Series games but the Milwaukee Brewers unfortunately lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in seven games.
Another mile stone moment for Yount was on September 9, 1992, when he acquired his 3,000 career hit, becoming only the 17th player to teach this goal. Yount retired in 1993 and his number (19) was retired by the Milwaukee Brewers in 1994. Yount was also accepted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1999, the first year that he was eligible. In 1999 he was also included on the ballot for the MLB All-Century Team where he took fifth overall among shortstops. Yount has made an incredible impact on the Milwaukee Brewers and holds many career records, including games, at-bats, runs, doubles, hits, triples, homers, RBIs, total bases, strikeouts and walks.
After retiring, Yount continued to stay in the baseball world by serving as first base coach and bench coach for the Arizona Diamondbacks from 2000-2004. He threw out a ceremonial first pitch at the 2002 MLB All-Star Game at Miller Park alongside other Milwaukee baseball bigwigs Hank Aaron, Warren Spahn and Bob Uecker. In 2005, Yount returned to the Milwaukee Brewers, becoming their new third base coach. He departed in 2007 but in 2008 came back again to coach for the team, this time as bench coach.

Milwaukee Brewers Pitcher Claudio Vargas Signs One Year Deal

It's only a one year deal, but Milwaukee Brewers pitcher Claudio Vargas is back. At age 31, Vargas has a few more years left. When pitchers reach a certain age or level of endurance, they may try their hand at being a reliever. That's what Vargas has been assigned to on the Brewer's roster for 2010.

He was released in March of 2008, only to come back in the summer of 2009. Vargas may have sealed his role as a reliever for his performance in the St. Louis series late in the 2009 Milwaukee Brewers season. He will join Trevor Hoffman, Todd Coffey, and LaTroy Hawkins in relief. The Milwaukee Brewers now need to lock up starting pitchers.

Randy Wolf Contact Finalized on Monday

The deal has been finalized with left hander Randy Wolf and signed a contract with the Milwaukee Brewers. After passing his physical and singing the papers, Wolf will be guaranteed $29.75 million over the next three years, including a club option for 2013. His promised salary will make this deal the third-richest for a pitcher in Brewers franchise history. Though Wolf insists this is right where he wants to be, he recently has conceded his “disappointment” that his hometown team the Dodgers didn’t fight harder to bring him back with his great stats last summer. Despite the initial burn on his ego, Wolf is excited to play for a great team like the Brewers that is willing and ready to appreciate his great skills. The Brewers aggressive inquiry and Wolf’s aptitude and availability have joined together to be the start of a great 2010 Milwaukee Brewers bullpen.
